Fluoride has equaled “healthy teeth” in our minds since it become an official policy of the U.S. Public Health Service in 1951 as a measure to prevent dental decay on a large scale. Today about 60% of US population gets fluoridated water on tap.

If you shop in health food stores, you may see some toothpastes and mouthwashes labeled “fluoride-free.” So, if fluoride’s so important for dental health, why would anyone opt to skip it? There is extensive evidence that fluoride could actually be harmful to our teeth and our overall health, especially when added to our water supply.

What is Fluoride Anyway?

Fluoride is a compound that occurs when fluorine ion bonds with another agent. Calcium fluoride is the most-common naturally-occurring form of fluoride, and in small amounts it is not toxic as it is not readily absorbed by the body. Calcium fluoride is NOT the fluoride used in water fluoridation and most dental products. All other form of fluoride, including silicofluorides, sodium fluoride, sodium monofluorophosphate, and others, ARE readily absorbed by the body.

Fluoride is not a nutrient; it acts as a poison when ingested and absorbed. As it is not something our bodies need, and there is no such thing as a fluoride deficiency. Although fluoride may play a role in promoting dental health and preventing caries, it’s doubtful anyone’s water really “needs” fluoridation.

Potential Risks of Overexposure to Fluoride

There are studies that link excess fluoride consumption to the following:

Bone Disease including fluorosis (where the teeth become weak, mottled, and discolored), hip fractures, ligament calcification, osteoporosis

Cancer – Especially Bone and Bladder

Gum Disease

Thyroid Dysfunction and Iodine Deficiency

Kidney and Liver Disease

Genetic Defects

Endocrine Imbalance

Nervous System Disorders – Including Alzheimer’s disease

Fluoride and Our Teeth

Fluoride fights dental decay by binding to your teeth, hardening them, and protecting them from acids. The same reason the fluoride is good for your teeth is also why it can be so harmful if ingested. When swallowed, it will build up on your bones, which is detrimental for bone health.

The compound used in most conventional and “natural” toothpastes and mouthwashes, sodium fluoride, is toxic when ingested. For this reason, toothpaste and mouthwash containing fluoride should never be swallowed.

So much conflicting information on the supposed dental health benefits of fluoride are available today, it’s almost impossible to tell what’s true and what’s false. Studies do show that tooth decay has declined in the US as a whole since fluoridation began, but it is also on the decline in non-fluoridated areas of the US and in Europe where fluoridation isn’t common.

From a holistic perspective, while it is certainly important to remove excess food from the teeth after eating, dental health is not just about what we use to clean our teeth. Healthy teeth depend on the overall health of our bodies determined by dietary intake, toxic exposure, and genetic make-up.

Fluoride in Our Water

Silicofluorides are what’s used most of the time for fluoridation of water supplies. These come from fluorosilicic acid, which is a by-product of phosphate production of the aluminum, steel, ceramic, phosphate fertilizer, and other chemical industries.

Silicofluorides often contain lead, uranium, arsenic and other pollutants. As you may guess, they are super toxic. They are also are non-biodegradable and if not used in fluoridation, they would need to be treated at a hazardous waste facility before being disposed of in the environment.

Certainly, fluoridation provides a cost benefit for many corporations, which is part of the reason fluoridation of public water supplies doesn’t sit well with many concerned citizens.

Regulations are in place to safeguard against “over” fluoridating water, yet some communities have pushed to completely stop adding this chemical to their water. Whether or not fluoridation is dangerous, adding what the FDA considers a “prescription drug” to drinking water does seem to violate fundamental rights to make individual choices about medical treatments.

Fluoride is so widely used in toothpastes, mouth washes, and other dental products, that almost anyone who practices even moderate dental health care is likely receiving plenty of fluoride without needing to also drink it in water. This is true for everyone, even residents of low income areas that were once thought to be helped dramatically by fluoridation.

Making Up Your Own Mind about Fluoride

In Your Water - If you’re concerned about fluoridation in your community or excessive fluoride consumption, a reverse osmosis water filter is the only way to eliminate it from your drinking water. Keep in mind that RO filters will strip your water of all minerals as well, so you will need to add some minerals (via supplementation) back to the water for optimal absorption (read more about water filters here.)

On Your Toothbrush – Rule #1: DON’T SWALLOW!
You can also opt for natural tooth care products that don’t contain fluoride if you wish to cut down on fluoride exposure. Xylitol is a natural and safe alcohol sugar excels at fighting bacteria. Xylitol can be found in some natural toothpastes and mouthwashes, and is a great alternative to fluoride. You can also use it in moderation as a sweetener - to soothe your sweet tooth while preventing tooth decay.

For Your Children – Even if you decide that you’re not concerned about fluoride for your own health, consider that young babies and children under 6 should not drink tap water if at all possible (this is especially a concern for those who are formula fed). Babies and children who cannot spit out toothpaste should use fluoride-free products until they are old enough not to swallow. Again, dental products with Xylitol are a great choice for kids.

Mastitis is a painful breast infection that results from a blocked duct. Mastitis commonly occurs in breastfeeding women especially during the first 3 months of nursing. Women who have had mastitis before and those with weakened immune systems are also more prone to getting it. In rare cases, mastitis occurs in women who have not recently given birth or are breastfeeding, and it may even happen post-menopause.

The first sign of mastitis is usually a painful area in one breast that feels warm to the touch and appears red. The infection causes the breast to become hot, swollen, red and painful as it progresses. Aches, chills and fever may be additional symptoms of mastitis, and the condition is sometimes mistaken for the flu.

Untreated mastitis can affect lymph nodes beneath the arm on the side of the infected breast, and an abscess can develop. Antibiotics are the western solutions, which isn’t great for breastfeeding moms and their babies. Fortunately, mastitis usually responds well to natural remedies. I recommend doing all or most of the following if you develop a breast infection or blocked duct…

Natural Treatment for Mastitis

Hydrate - It’s very important to drink plenty of fluids to recover from mastitis. Ten to twelve glasses of water should be consumed a day to maintain milk supply and support proper body functioning and healing.

Continue Breastfeeding - No matter how tempted you may be to stop breastfeeding while you have a breast infection, don’t. Mastitis does not affect baby’s health, and it is one of the best natural remedies for mastitis. In order to heal, your breasts must be emptied either through nursing or pumping. Nursing in different positions may make breastfeeding more comfortable and help speed your recovery.

Heat and massage: Gently massaging the breasts can help prevent milk ducts from becoming plugged and worsening mastitis. Massage breasts toward the nipple under hot running water – This may not feel comfortable at the time, but it will help promote healing.

Frozen, raw cabbage leaves as a poultice - The coolness can reduce pain and inflammation, while the cabbage leaves are said to draw out the infection. Try resting with this remedy after massaging in a hot shower. The leaves should be replaced when they reach room temperature.

Acupuncture - Oriental medicine typically views mastitis as an accumulation of toxic heat. Acupuncture can help clear the heat and toxicity while treating any underlying imbalance that may be causing or contributing to the condition.

Herbs – Buy a ready-made herbal tincture to treat mastitis, I like Mastitis Remedy by Wish Garden, or see your herbalist for a customized formula perfect for you.

Homeopathy -

Phytolacca- The most commonly used homeopathic remedy to treat mastitis, especially for cracked nipples and blocked milk ducts when there is heat, pain, and possible flu symptoms

Belladonna- Use when there is heat, throbbing and redness. The pain is worse for any sudden jarring. There may be a red streak from the site of the inflammation.

Bryonia- Use when there is dryness and the breasts feel heavy, painful and hard; and are worse for any type of movement. There is often constipation, dry lips and extreme thirst. There may be insufficient milk (dryness).

Lac Caninum- Use when symptoms alternate sides. The mother may suffer from low self-esteem.

Graphites- For cracked and sore nipples with small blisters

Pulsatilla- Useful for sore nipples especially when mom is weepy and needs lots of affection. Generally the mother feels no thirst.

Preventing Mastitis

Empty breasts - Making sure breasts are emptied of milk as completely as possible during feeds is one way to prevent mastitis. Use a pump if your baby is not feeding well for even a short period of time.

Avoiding nipple cracking and irritation by insuring that baby latches on to the breast and is positioned properly for feeding. If you are unsure, consult with a certified lactation consultant immediately.

Keep it loose- Tight fitting clothing, including underwire bras can contribute to or exacerbate a clogged duct.

Be Well! Get plenty of rest, stay hydrated, and eat a nutritious diet to prevent breast infections as well as promote quick recovery. The healthier you are, the less susceptible you will be to any illness, including mastitis. If you suspect the beginnings of a blocked duct, begin treatment right away to prevent a full-blown infection.

After a what seemed like a very long cool, and wet winter here in Southern California, spring has officially sprung! In Oriental Medicine, Spring is the time of the wood element and emphasizes new growth. Just as the earth nourishes dormant seeds and springs forth new life this time of year, spring is the perfect time to take advantage of spring’s activating energy by getting outside to enjoy the warmer, longer, and brighter days. Eating in harmony with the season will ensure that your body can regenerate and bloom this spring.

Spring Cleaning: It isn’t necessary to fast in order to cleanse your body, but you’ll probably want to change some foods to tune to the season. A spring diet should emphasize green veggies, light vegetable soups and other foods that have a cleansing effect. These are foods that can lighten the load for the nervous system, also known as the Liver channel in Oriental Medicine. A lighter diet will also provide the nourishment and support our bodies need as our energy bursts forth during the spring season.

Go Green: Start your body’s spring cleanse by adding more greens – especially dark leafy greens such as bok choy, kale, chard, spinach and collards. Young, leafy greens such as baby lettuces or dandelion leaves and seasonal veggies such as asparagus and peas are ideal for a spring time diet too.

Lighten Up: Decreasing heavy meat and carbohydrate consumption and cutting back on heavy sauces is seasonally appropriate. You may even find you’re craving these foods less change of season, so instead of beef stew and a hunk of bread, have a mixed green salad with seared fish. Though a good idea any time of year, try bread products made with sprouted grains as a good alternative to regular white flour foods.

Raw-some: While a 100% raw diet is not for everyone, spring time is an appropriate time for most people to incorporate more raw fruits and veggies. Not only will these foods feel less dense, but, the enzyme and mineral content in raw produce will give your body a wellness boost.

Naturally sweet: Though Easter may be a time for chocolate bunnies and jelly beans, try to soothe your sweet tooth with seasonal fruit. In southern California citrus, kiwis, and strawberries are ripe and delicious in the spring.

Drink Yourself Clean: Refreshing teas are another great addition to a spring cleansing diet, including green tea, tea with mint, chrysanthemum tea and natural “detox” or “cleansing” teas. You can sip these teas cold instead of hot for a cooling effect. Try adding a pinch of sea salt and some sliced lemon and orange to your water for extra refreshing, and extra hydrating mineral water.

Finishing touches: Add some cleansing, cooling, and refreshing herbs and spices to your favorite light meals, including green onions, dill, cilantro, oregano, green garlic, and fennel.

Deep Cleaning
I’m personally not a huge fan of fasting for most people as the extreme and temporary nature of a fast can be extremely shocking to the body. In an ideal world, everyone would simply eat a diverse, well balanced, seasonal diet and avoid junky, over-processed foods. In reality, this doesn’t always happen, and occasionally it’s nice to give the digestive system a mini vacation.
Bieler’s Broth is a great recipe to try when your looking to lighten up. The combination of veggies is thought to be ideal for restoring acid-alkaline imbalance as well as sodium-potassium balance to the body. Perfect for recovery from stress and adrenal fatigue or a weekend of over-indulgence, this soup is recommended for patients with back and ligament problems. Try eating it for breakfast as a cleansing start to the day or under a practitioners guidance use this for a one or more day cleanse.

Bieler’s Broth
- 4 medium zucchini sliced
- 1 pound string beans, ends removed
- 2 sticks celery chopped
- 1-2 bunches parsley, stems removed
- Fresh herbs such as thyme or tarragon tied together with string (optional)
- 1 Quart filtered water

Boil for about ½ hr, remove herbs and blend into a thick soup. Season with sea salt if desired.

For a more culinary- and slightly less cleansing version that is still great for adrenal fatigue, back pain, and ligament issues, use chicken broth instead of water and add 4 tablespoons of tomato paste and ½ teaspoon of paprika.

I’ve always loved salt. Back in the day, this meant white powder pouring onto fast food French Fries. Now, older, a tad wiser, and possessing more refined taste buds, I’ve found salt that’s both delicious and healthy.

What? Healthy salt?

Yes, that’s right. Salt (in its minimally processed, high quality form) may not deserve all the evil slashings it receives.

Out in the mainstream, there’s a lot of confusing misinformation about salt consumption. On the one hand, we’re told we need the iodine in “iodized” table salt to promote thyroid health and proper functioning. On the other hand, we’re told to avoid consuming too much salt as it can cause high blood pressure, fluid retention and other health problems. Most healthy conscious folks try to avoid it as much as possible, while fine chefs know that salt is an essential component to optimizing taste. So, what’s the shake?

Salt is essential to life; without it we die. We are equipped with salt taste buds, and we need salt for protein and carbohydrate digestion, adrenal function, cellular metabolism and brain development. Unrefined salt provides us with many trace minerals that are also essential to life. Most of the soil that grows our fruits and vegetables (even organic) is mineral poor, so a pinch of rich salt provides our bodies with minerals it requires.

The Facts about Salt Studies

Salt has been considered a valuable and useful substance for thousands of years by cultures throughout the world. How is it possible that what’s traditionally been considered a healthy and helpful substance could suddenly prove so threatening?

While there are plenty of studies to support low-sodium diet claims, the fact is that there are plenty of studies that prove the opposite.

Research by epidemiologist Michael Alderman stresses it isn’t in everyone’s best interest to eat a low sodium diet to control blood pressure, and doing so may actually even do more harm than good for many people. After an extensive study, Alderman found that patients who consumed the LEAST sodium had the MOST cardiovascular complications and myocardial infarctions. While some individuals who are “salt sensitive” may benefit from restricting sodium intake, the long term health complications and negative side effects of going low-salt are more likely to be problematic for the general population.

The Weston A. Price Foundation has compiled extensive historical and cultural evidence that that culprit in poor cardiovascular health and other “sodium” related issues is in fact tied to the onslaught of processed foods. Their book, Nourishing Traditions, contains a wealth of information and wisdom regarding food choices and preparation for optimal nutrition.

Commercial vs. Natural Salt

To understand the truth about salt, the first thing you need to know is that commercial, table salt (in most salt shakers and packaged foods) is NOT the type of natural salt our bodies need for good health.

Commercial salt is sodium chloride, a chemical this is made by processing natural salt at high temperatures which changes the molecular structure and strips other vital minerals that salt naturally contains. Commercial salt also contains additives such as anti-caking agents, iodine, and even sugar. Because it’s not in it’s natural form, salt as pure sodium chloride is excessive and the body must work to excrete it. Table salt therefore, creates a heavy burden for the body, and excess consumption can certainly contribute to health problems including high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, and fluid retention.

Because of the widespread use and abuse of processed salt, we have been told for years to avoid salt all together. Following this advice can lead to even more problems. We are all salty on the inside– our blood, sweat, tears, and even our urine contain salts. It’s important to replenish the minerals in our bodies, but using the right salt is key. The best way to put salt back into your body is to use high mineral content, minimally processed salts.

Choosing Healthy Salt

When choosing your salt, do it consciously. “Sea Salt” that looks and tastes like Morton’s Iodized Salt probably isn’t much better for your body than the junk food salt. Look for salt that contains other minerals, is not snow white and uniform, and doesn’t create a burning sensation when placed on your tongue. High quality salt shouldn’t leave you feeling bloated or thirsty either. Two great options:

Celtic sea salt (traditionally hand-harvested from the pristine coast of Brittany, France) contains over 80 minerals from the sea. The mineral content in Celtic sea salt is optimal for for maintaining proper fluid balance and utilization in the body. It also normalizes blood pressure, enhances digestion, and nourishes the adrenal glands. Celtic sea salt is available at many natural food stores. It costs more than commercial salt, but it’s a small price to pay for a grand investment in your health. Celtic sea salt is also delicious, so your taste buds will be happy too. This is what we use in our home.

Himalayan salt is another option. This surprisingly pink salt extracted from the Himalayas is said to contain all 84 elements found in our bodies and important trace minerals. Mined and hand-washed, this salt is purported as a more pure alternative to sea salt. Do a taste test to discover for yourself what tastes best and feels best in your body.

Sea Salt Tips

Drink it- For an inexpensive alternative to sugary electrolyte drinks like Vitamin Water and Gatorade, try adding a pinch of sea slt and a squeeze of lemon to your water anytime including for better absorption on hot days, when working out, or when recovering from illness.

Give it to baby - Though the common advice is to not salt baby’s food before the age of two, high quality sea salt is completely safe for babies and young children. In fact, a pinch of good salt on their food will provide baby with much needed micro-mineral and help them to digest proteins and carbohydrates.

Be Bold - Dump out your salt shaker and replace it with a pinch bowl of your new, healthy salt. Add it to your dishes with confidence, rather than caution knowing you are adding flavor and vitality to your food and your body. When out and about, either BYO salt or use convention salt with moderation.

Happy New Year! While we (in the western world) celebrate the New Year on January 1, The Chinese New Year falls on the second New Moon after the winter solstice (Feb 14th for 2010).

2010 marks the Year of the Metal Tiger, and like its namesake might suggest, the Metal Tiger is predicted to bring a period of fierce unpredictability, swiftness, a lot of activity and change. The metal element is associated with white, so you may also hear 2010 referred to as the Year of the White Tiger.

Origins and Traditions

Chinese New Year is a centuries-old celebration to chase away evil for the upcoming year and welcome good fortune.

Legend has it that Chinese New Year began when villagers sought to protect themselves against a mythical beast called the Nien that arrived each New Year’s Day to devour everything in its path, including crops, livestock, people and especially children.

Villagers tried to protect themselves from the Nien by putting food outside their doors each New Year to appease the beast’s hunger. One year, the villagers noticed the Nien was frightened away by a small child dressed in red. So instead of putting out food, the villagers began to hang red lanterns and other red decorations around their doors and windows. They also used firecrackers to scare the Nien away, and they were successful. The Nien finally disappeared for good!

Modern Chinese New Year celebrations involve feasts with family, parades, new clothes, gifts and other traditions that highlight the bounty of the old year and the promise of a fresh new year. Red is the most important color in the festivities, and is seen everywhere in clothes, decorations, and foods.

Chinese Zodiac Simplified

The Tiger is one of 12 animals that presides once every 12 years in the Chinese calendar.

The Chinese zodiac animals are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Hare/Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig/Boar. According to tradition, people may share some of the traits of the animal that designates their birth year. You may already know your animal from the popular paper placemats at Chinese restaurants, and you can determine your Chinese Zodiac animal by the year of your birth.

Zodiac animals are believed to influence the events and characteristics of their years, so they are used for astrological predictions for the general climate as well as personal predictions.

Whether or not you’re a “believer” in astrology, there’s no denying that at the specific place and time of your birth, the moon and stars and planets were at a unique relative relationship to you. Just as tides are affected by the moon, so does astrology give us one small clue to your unique make-up.

In addition to a zodiac animal, each year is designated a Chinese Five Elements - Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each of the Five Elements possess certain characteristics that effect each other and cyclically transform into the next. 2010 is a Metal year, and Metal is a symbol of strength, precision, and determination.

2010 – Time to Growl, Gnash, and Pounce

Tigers are beings of leadership, fierceness, and vigor. The Metal element clashes with the tiger nature, possibly creating explosive and challenging events for 2010. Although world-wide conflicts and even disasters may feature in Tiger years, there’s also the opportunity for incredible advances and positive changes, too. Metal Tiger is a year for staying on top of things, staying positive, and keeping busy.

Regardless of your Chinese zodiac sign, you should prepare to be very active this year and be willing to welcome change and new opportunities. Things may happen a little fast and furious, so use these opportunities to make the most your personal talents and resources. If you heed astrologers’ predictions, the Year of the Metal Tiger offers many the so-called “chance of a lifetime” you won’t want to miss.

About Drinking Water

Water, water, everywhere! But which is best to drink?

My family and I have been on a quest to find the healthiest drinking water. Here’s what we’ve learned:

The Goal

You may know that the human body is 70% water, making water consumption essential for survival and health. You have three basic choices when it comes to your drinking water: drink from the tap, buy bottled water, or filter your tap water.

Bottled water is not the best choice for daily consumptions for several reasons. First, it is a waste of plastic. Second, that plastic can leach nasty chemicals and hormone disruptors into your water. Finally, despite all the fancy advertising, the quality of bottled water may be not all it’s hyped up to be.

From the way our urban (and suburban) sinks flow, it seems as though we are blessed with a endless supply of clean water (as opposed to many in 3rd world countries who are not). In reality, our water supplies are limited (see the end of this article). Furthermore, the water that flows through our taps is heavily processed and contains loads of unhealthy contaminants including hormones from discarded medications, toxins from gasoline bio-products, chlorine from processing, fluoride as a “public health” measure, and more. So while we are very lucky to have plentiful, safe water, there are certainly ways to make it more healthy.

There are six types of contaminants you want to remove from municipal tap water:

Chlorine and chloramines

Volatile Organic Compounds (pesticides, herbicides, etc.)

Heavy metals (Lead, Mercury, Aluminum, Cadmium, Chromium, Copper)

Bacterial and viruses (Giardia and Cryptosporidium)

General Sediment

Fluoride (some may argue this one, but I think fluoride should be a personal choice rather than a public one)

The ideal water is both free of contaminants and mineral rich as if you were drinking from a well at the bottom of a pristine, isolated mountain. Your tap water isn’t this good, and bottled water has its problems. The solution lies in the right water filter… But how to choose?

Water Filter Options

1. Activated Carbon Water Filter (like Brita, Pur, Aquasana)

How it works: (Faucet, Pitcher, or Whole House) Granular, activated carbon or powdered block carbon absorbs impurities.

Pros: Popular for home use as it is economical, easy to install, and effective at filtering out the most deadly contaminants. Can be installed for whole house filtration, providing water for bathing that is free of chlorine and other contaminants which can also improve indoor air quality.

Cons: Does not completely remove arsenic, fluoride, and nitrates. Susceptible to mold attacks.

2. Ceramic Water Filter (like Stefani Terracotta)

How it works: (Counter top) A cartridge of a fossil substance and/or nano-silver effectively traps and neutralizes bacteria.

Pros: Removes 95% of chlorine, pesticides, iron, aluminium and lead; and 99% of cryptosporidium, guardia and sediment.

Cons: Does not remove fluoride. Often produces a slow water flow.

3. Water Distiller

How it works: Water is boiled, killing microbes, steam is collected as distilled water leaving solid contaminants behind.

Pros: Distilled water is pure H20.

Cons: Minerals are eliminated in the filtration process.

4. Reverse Osmosis Filter

How it works: (Under sink installation) Relies on technology called hyper-filtration, producing water that is essentially the same as distilled water.

Pros: RO filters remove essentially all contaminants.

Cons: Although this water is very pure, it is also devoid of essential minerals.

5. Water Ionizer (like Kangen & Jupiter)

How it works: (Under sink or counter top) A water ionizers or electrolyzed alkaline water filter separates water into an alkaline, mineral-rich water for drinking and an acidic, mineral-void water for washing and cleaning.

Pros: Many people who drink alkaline water report health benefits, while the antiseptic properties of acid water make it excellent for cleaning.

Cons: Water ionizers may still require additional pre-filtration to completely remove fluoride. The ionization is only effective for about an hour, so if you fill a bottle on the go it’s healthful properties may be gone by the time you’re gulping.

6. Magnetic Systems

How it works: Polarizes minerals in water as it is passed through a magnetic field or media.

Pros: Purported benefits similar to water ionizers.

Cons: Does not filter or ionize water.

7. Ultraviolet Water Purification Lamps (used in 3rd world hotels)

How it works: Irradiates water with UV rays that kill all living organisms.

Pros: Very effective at killing microbes.

Cons: Ineffective at particle filtration.

Still Confused? Here’s the last drop:

Ultimately , it’s up to you to decide what’s important for your family, and you can read more about water filters here. My conclusion, which is consistent with the Weston A. Price Foundation, and others, is that since fluoride can only be removed by distillation or reverse osmosis, the best option is to completely purify your water and then add minerals back into it with a supplement like Trace Minerals drops. Another option is offered by Beyond 02, which has a complete reverse osmosis filtering system followed by a re-mineralization process for the ideal water straight from your tap.

A whole house filter is a great idea, especially if anyone in your household suffers from allergies, asthma, or other respiratory conditions. But if you’re concerned about completely removing potential toxins such as fluoride and arsenic, you probably still want to follow the former recommendation for your drinking water as well.

If the costs of these filters seems impossible, don’t go on a water strike… choose the next best option in your price range. This may be a countertop Brita filter or good ole’ tap water. Though important, the perfect water is just one piece of the big picture of achieving health and well being.

A Few Words About Water as a Limited Resource

In an age where Coca Cola and Pepsi are making bank on bottled water, it’s really not a huge surprise that clean drinking water is a precious commodity. Here in Los Angeles, only 30% of our water comes from local ground water. The rest is shipped in from the Colorado River and dams and reservoirs along a 444 mile aqueduct starting in Northern California. Please remember this the next time you have a 15 minute shower or water you nice green lawn on a hot day. Be sure to share this knowledge with your children so they might still have clean water to drink when they’re in your shoes.

4 Reasons to Try Oriental Medicine

Let’s face it, our healthcare system sucks. We pay too much for care that is often impersonal and ineffective. Insurance is a maze that creates more stress than well-being.

Oriental medicine offers an alternative option for your family’s health. Here’s four great reasons why you should choose Oriental Medicine for Your family’s health.

1. It Works –

For acute and chronic conditions, patients young and old, scientific research is beginning to prove what millions of patients and OM practitioners have known for thousands of years: It works!

In recent years, studies including clinical trials have lead leading health organizations to recognize the effectiveness of OM treatments such as acupuncture, moxibustion and herbal remedies. OM is finally gaining the outstanding reputation it’s had for millennia in the East throughout the rest of the world.

2. It’s Safe –

Oriental Medicine is a natural modality that enhances the body’s innate healing abilities resulting in:

Less Side Effects- Unlike all pharmaceuticals, Chinese herbs, acupuncture and other OM treatments do not involve side effects uncomfortable or dangerous side effects. Side effects are an indication that medications are disrupting the way the body is functioning. OM treatments work to restore balance and harmony within the body rather than cause disruptions.

Little Risk- OM treatments are so safe, most practitioners pay approximately $50 a month for malpractice insurance versus Western doctors who spend an average of $1000 monthly for coverage. Herbal treatments, acupuncture and other OM treatments involve virtually no risk or potential safety hazard when administered by skilled practitioners.

3. It will Save you $$! –

OM is a preventative medicine that addresses the whole person and aims to treat the root cause of illnesses, not just symptoms. Preventative medicine, though seemingly costly on the outset, prevents chronic illnesses that will cost infinitely more in treatment with medications, surgeries, and procedures.

As an example, investing $20 in high quality fish oil can help prevent heart disease, promote heart health and treat depression, among many other health benefits. Compared to the actual cost of taking high blood pressure medication or antidepressants long term, investing in high quality fish oil is a bargain!

4. It Improves Quality of Life –

One of the best results of individualized and preventative care of Oriental medicine is improved quality of life. OM often involves lifestyle recommendations that not only promote good health, but improve how you look, feel and function in your daily life.

A healthier diet, regular exercise, and stress management can improve your mood, help you sleep better and promote weight loss. You’ll have more energy for activities you enjoy. You’ll feel more relaxed and less stressed out, and relationships with family and friends will improve, too. The same thing happens when treating or managing health conditions doesn’t involve side effects, discomfort or stress.

Just knowing you have responsibility for and power over your own health can improve your quality of life as well.

The first time I heard about the Blood Type Diet, I had just moved from the east coast and was working as a waitress in Malibu. I impatiently waited for a customer to decide what items on the menu fit her blood type, all the while thinking, “OMG! Yet another weird diet for body-obsessed Californians!” Many years later, I have a more balanced view on blood type and its role in our well being.

Blood type is part of everyone’s unique physical and biological makeup, and is vitally important in Western medical treatments like blood transfusions. But research by Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo links blood type with a much more complex and important role – our overall health, including longevity, resistance to disease, and physical and emotional health. Dr. D’Adamo suggests that blood type acts as a “story line” of our ancestry, and the blood type diets insures that we eat the ideal foods for our genetic makeup.

By relying on blood type as a “road map,” each of us can make decisions about diet, lifestyle choices, and medical treatments that will work best for our particular biology.

Understanding Your Blood Type

Type O

O types do best with a carnivorous diet rich in meat and fish, but cannot digest dairy or wheat well. Vegetables and nuts are recommended for type Os, but legumes should be eaten sparingly.

These food recommendations are in line with Type Os predisposition to stomach and thyroid disorders and “environmentally intolerant” immune systems. Prone to “fight-or-fight” responses, Type Os also thrive on intense physical activity, and should avoid stimulants.

Type A

A types thrive on a vegan diet that is rich in plant foods. Fresh, organic foods including vegetables, grains, beans, tofu, fruit and legumes are recommended. Occasional seafood is the only suggested animal protein food.

The diet for Type As reflects their sensitive immune system and predisposition to cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Type As often internalize stress and do best with gentle exercise and a strong sense of community.

Type B

The Type B diet reflects their flexible digestive system and strong immune system. Type Bs can break down fats, animal proteins and carbohydrates without difficulty, so they are able to eat a wide variety of foods, including dairy products.

Grains, beans and legumes, fruit and vegetables are all good choices, while chicken, shellfish and tomatoes should be eliminated from the diet. B Types are often flexible and adaptable to life’s challenges and thrive on both physically and mentally stimulating activities.

Type AB

Those with blood type AB should consume a mixed diet including meat, seafood, dairy, beans, most grains, legumes, and plant foods. Red meat should be avoided, as should any grain products or breads that contain corn or buckwheat. AB’s do best with small meals and may benefit from avoiding the combo of protein and starch in the same meal.

The mixed diet is in keeping with this blood types’ usual resistance to allergies and ABs’ risk for heart disease, anemia and cancer. AB’s do best with a mixture of intense and gentle exercise.
.

In my practice I take blood type into consideration as one piece of information that may provide insight into your ideal diet and lifestyle. It’s important to remember that this is only a bit of your unique make up, and just as it would be foolish to base your entire life’s decisions on your astrology chart, blood type is also not your only guide.

You can find out more about the blood type diet and Dr. D’Adamo’s book, Eat Right 4 Your Type at DaDamo.com.

Soy’s had a huge hey-day as a miracle food from the 90’s, and the hype is still alive and well for many health-conscious people. BUT, while soy and soy products may serve as a good source protein and other nutrients for vegetarians, in reality, this bean has quite of list of reasons why to just say NO including allergies, thyroid problems, hormonal imbalances including PMS and infertility, and more.

Before you pour that soy milk on your cereal or down a tofu scramble, read about how this “health” food may be causing more harm than good.

Phytoestrogens

Soy contains more phytoestrogens than almost any other food product. Phytoestrogen is plant-based estrogen that mimic the natural estrogen found in our bodies. The potential problem with this chemical is the effect it can have on individuals who under normal circumstances have no need for an estrogen supplement.

Peri-menopausal women may use soy products to help control discomforting symptoms that result from hormonal imbalances, including hot flashes and mood swings. But what are the effects of phytoestrogen on men, children, teens and young women?

Early Onset Puberty- Children given soy formula as infants may experience early puberty as compared to their non-soy-guzzling peers. Early puberty is a problem because it exposes the body to sex hormones for a longer period of time that what is normal.

For young boys, this means an increased risk of developing testicular cancer as an adult.

For girls, early puberty increases the lifetime risk of developing breast cancer, ovarian cysts, and thyroid disease.

Breast Cancer- The consumption of soy products and increased intake of phytoestrogens may be linked to the onset of breast cancer at an early age in women .

Throid issues- Japanese research suggests consuming soybeans may cause hypothroidism and goiter.

Male Fertility Issues- The phytoestrogens present in soy can significantly lower a man’s sperm count which can contribute to infertility.

Toxicity and Allergens

Toxicity- High manganese levels in soy formula may cause brain damage from toxicity. There also appears to be a relationship between soy formula consumption and the development of ADHD and behavioral problems in kids.

Allergies- While soy is among the top 8 most common food allergens, it can be a silent villian since allergic reactions to soy are not always immediate.

Genetically Modified Soy Foods

The phytoestrogens and other substances in soy foods may be the cause of health risks, but that’s not the only problem with soy.

Since the 1990s, genetically modified soy is widely grown and included in food products in the U.S. The seeds used in these crops are genetically modified in laboratories to enhance desirable traits, such as improved nutritional content, heat resistance or resistance to herbicides.

GM foods pose huge threats on the environment, reek havoc for farmers livelihood, and may be dangerous to human health including possible increase risk for allergy.

Take a Conservative Approach to Soy Consumption

Be conservative and conscious about your soy consumption. Avoid genetically modified soy, eliminate soy where possible (especially for children or those with any immune system weakness or possible hormone imbalance), then enjoy soy foods you love in moderation. Two more things to know:

Go Fermented- Only consume fermented soy products, such as tempeh, miso, natto, and fermented tofu. Fermented soy does not contain the toxins present non-cultured soy products. Fermentation increases the availability of isoflavones which are associated with cancer prevention, and fermentation produces probiotics, the beneficial bacteria that improves digestion and nutrient absorption in the body.

Read your labels- Soy is a common ingredient in popular “health” foods and protein supplements. Make sure you know what you’re putting in your mouth to avoid accidentally saucing yourself with soy.
