I’ve always loved salt. Back in the day, this meant white powder pouring onto fast food French Fries. Now, older, a tad wiser, and possessing more refined taste buds, I’ve found salt that’s both delicious and healthy.

What? Healthy salt?

Yes, that’s right. Salt (in its minimally processed, high quality form) may not deserve all the evil slashings it receives.

Out in the mainstream, there’s a lot of confusing misinformation about salt consumption. On the one hand, we’re told we need the iodine in “iodized” table salt to promote thyroid health and proper functioning. On the other hand, we’re told to avoid consuming too much salt as it can cause high blood pressure, fluid retention and other health problems. Most healthy conscious folks try to avoid it as much as possible, while fine chefs know that salt is an essential component to optimizing taste. So, what’s the shake?

Salt is essential to life; without it we die. We are equipped with salt taste buds, and we need salt for protein and carbohydrate digestion, adrenal function, cellular metabolism and brain development. Unrefined salt provides us with many trace minerals that are also essential to life. Most of the soil that grows our fruits and vegetables (even organic) is mineral poor, so a pinch of rich salt provides our bodies with minerals it requires.

The Facts about Salt Studies

Salt has been considered a valuable and useful substance for thousands of years by cultures throughout the world. How is it possible that what’s traditionally been considered a healthy and helpful substance could suddenly prove so threatening?

While there are plenty of studies to support low-sodium diet claims, the fact is that there are plenty of studies that prove the opposite.

Research by epidemiologist Michael Alderman stresses it isn’t in everyone’s best interest to eat a low sodium diet to control blood pressure, and doing so may actually even do more harm than good for many people. After an extensive study, Alderman found that patients who consumed the LEAST sodium had the MOST cardiovascular complications and myocardial infarctions. While some individuals who are “salt sensitive” may benefit from restricting sodium intake, the long term health complications and negative side effects of going low-salt are more likely to be problematic for the general population.

The Weston A. Price Foundation has compiled extensive historical and cultural evidence that that culprit in poor cardiovascular health and other “sodium” related issues is in fact tied to the onslaught of processed foods. Their book, Nourishing Traditions, contains a wealth of information and wisdom regarding food choices and preparation for optimal nutrition.

Commercial vs. Natural Salt

To understand the truth about salt, the first thing you need to know is that commercial, table salt (in most salt shakers and packaged foods) is NOT the type of natural salt our bodies need for good health.

Commercial salt is sodium chloride, a chemical this is made by processing natural salt at high temperatures which changes the molecular structure and strips other vital minerals that salt naturally contains. Commercial salt also contains additives such as anti-caking agents, iodine, and even sugar. Because it’s not in it’s natural form, salt as pure sodium chloride is excessive and the body must work to excrete it. Table salt therefore, creates a heavy burden for the body, and excess consumption can certainly contribute to health problems including high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, and fluid retention.

Because of the widespread use and abuse of processed salt, we have been told for years to avoid salt all together. Following this advice can lead to even more problems. We are all salty on the inside– our blood, sweat, tears, and even our urine contain salts. It’s important to replenish the minerals in our bodies, but using the right salt is key. The best way to put salt back into your body is to use high mineral content, minimally processed salts.

Choosing Healthy Salt

When choosing your salt, do it consciously. “Sea Salt” that looks and tastes like Morton’s Iodized Salt probably isn’t much better for your body than the junk food salt. Look for salt that contains other minerals, is not snow white and uniform, and doesn’t create a burning sensation when placed on your tongue. High quality salt shouldn’t leave you feeling bloated or thirsty either. Two great options:

Celtic sea salt (traditionally hand-harvested from the pristine coast of Brittany, France) contains over 80 minerals from the sea. The mineral content in Celtic sea salt is optimal for for maintaining proper fluid balance and utilization in the body. It also normalizes blood pressure, enhances digestion, and nourishes the adrenal glands. Celtic sea salt is available at many natural food stores. It costs more than commercial salt, but it’s a small price to pay for a grand investment in your health. Celtic sea salt is also delicious, so your taste buds will be happy too. This is what we use in our home.

Himalayan salt is another option. This surprisingly pink salt extracted from the Himalayas is said to contain all 84 elements found in our bodies and important trace minerals. Mined and hand-washed, this salt is purported as a more pure alternative to sea salt. Do a taste test to discover for yourself what tastes best and feels best in your body.

Sea Salt Tips

Drink it- For an inexpensive alternative to sugary electrolyte drinks like Vitamin Water and Gatorade, try adding a pinch of sea slt and a squeeze of lemon to your water anytime including for better absorption on hot days, when working out, or when recovering from illness.

Give it to baby - Though the common advice is to not salt baby’s food before the age of two, high quality sea salt is completely safe for babies and young children. In fact, a pinch of good salt on their food will provide baby with much needed micro-mineral and help them to digest proteins and carbohydrates.

Be Bold - Dump out your salt shaker and replace it with a pinch bowl of your new, healthy salt. Add it to your dishes with confidence, rather than caution knowing you are adding flavor and vitality to your food and your body. When out and about, either BYO salt or use convention salt with moderation.

Happy New Year! While we (in the western world) celebrate the New Year on January 1, The Chinese New Year falls on the second New Moon after the winter solstice (Feb 14th for 2010).

2010 marks the Year of the Metal Tiger, and like its namesake might suggest, the Metal Tiger is predicted to bring a period of fierce unpredictability, swiftness, a lot of activity and change. The metal element is associated with white, so you may also hear 2010 referred to as the Year of the White Tiger.

Origins and Traditions

Chinese New Year is a centuries-old celebration to chase away evil for the upcoming year and welcome good fortune.

Legend has it that Chinese New Year began when villagers sought to protect themselves against a mythical beast called the Nien that arrived each New Year’s Day to devour everything in its path, including crops, livestock, people and especially children.

Villagers tried to protect themselves from the Nien by putting food outside their doors each New Year to appease the beast’s hunger. One year, the villagers noticed the Nien was frightened away by a small child dressed in red. So instead of putting out food, the villagers began to hang red lanterns and other red decorations around their doors and windows. They also used firecrackers to scare the Nien away, and they were successful. The Nien finally disappeared for good!

Modern Chinese New Year celebrations involve feasts with family, parades, new clothes, gifts and other traditions that highlight the bounty of the old year and the promise of a fresh new year. Red is the most important color in the festivities, and is seen everywhere in clothes, decorations, and foods.

Chinese Zodiac Simplified

The Tiger is one of 12 animals that presides once every 12 years in the Chinese calendar.

The Chinese zodiac animals are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Hare/Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig/Boar. According to tradition, people may share some of the traits of the animal that designates their birth year. You may already know your animal from the popular paper placemats at Chinese restaurants, and you can determine your Chinese Zodiac animal by the year of your birth.

Zodiac animals are believed to influence the events and characteristics of their years, so they are used for astrological predictions for the general climate as well as personal predictions.

Whether or not you’re a “believer” in astrology, there’s no denying that at the specific place and time of your birth, the moon and stars and planets were at a unique relative relationship to you. Just as tides are affected by the moon, so does astrology give us one small clue to your unique make-up.

In addition to a zodiac animal, each year is designated a Chinese Five Elements - Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each of the Five Elements possess certain characteristics that effect each other and cyclically transform into the next. 2010 is a Metal year, and Metal is a symbol of strength, precision, and determination.

2010 – Time to Growl, Gnash, and Pounce

Tigers are beings of leadership, fierceness, and vigor. The Metal element clashes with the tiger nature, possibly creating explosive and challenging events for 2010. Although world-wide conflicts and even disasters may feature in Tiger years, there’s also the opportunity for incredible advances and positive changes, too. Metal Tiger is a year for staying on top of things, staying positive, and keeping busy.

Regardless of your Chinese zodiac sign, you should prepare to be very active this year and be willing to welcome change and new opportunities. Things may happen a little fast and furious, so use these opportunities to make the most your personal talents and resources. If you heed astrologers’ predictions, the Year of the Metal Tiger offers many the so-called “chance of a lifetime” you won’t want to miss.

About Drinking Water

Water, water, everywhere! But which is best to drink?

My family and I have been on a quest to find the healthiest drinking water. Here’s what we’ve learned:

The Goal

You may know that the human body is 70% water, making water consumption essential for survival and health. You have three basic choices when it comes to your drinking water: drink from the tap, buy bottled water, or filter your tap water.

Bottled water is not the best choice for daily consumptions for several reasons. First, it is a waste of plastic. Second, that plastic can leach nasty chemicals and hormone disruptors into your water. Finally, despite all the fancy advertising, the quality of bottled water may be not all it’s hyped up to be.

From the way our urban (and suburban) sinks flow, it seems as though we are blessed with a endless supply of clean water (as opposed to many in 3rd world countries who are not). In reality, our water supplies are limited (see the end of this article). Furthermore, the water that flows through our taps is heavily processed and contains loads of unhealthy contaminants including hormones from discarded medications, toxins from gasoline bio-products, chlorine from processing, fluoride as a “public health” measure, and more. So while we are very lucky to have plentiful, safe water, there are certainly ways to make it more healthy.

There are six types of contaminants you want to remove from municipal tap water:

Chlorine and chloramines

Volatile Organic Compounds (pesticides, herbicides, etc.)

Heavy metals (Lead, Mercury, Aluminum, Cadmium, Chromium, Copper)

Bacterial and viruses (Giardia and Cryptosporidium)

General Sediment

Fluoride (some may argue this one, but I think fluoride should be a personal choice rather than a public one)

The ideal water is both free of contaminants and mineral rich as if you were drinking from a well at the bottom of a pristine, isolated mountain. Your tap water isn’t this good, and bottled water has its problems. The solution lies in the right water filter… But how to choose?

Water Filter Options

1. Activated Carbon Water Filter (like Brita, Pur, Aquasana)

How it works: (Faucet, Pitcher, or Whole House) Granular, activated carbon or powdered block carbon absorbs impurities.

Pros: Popular for home use as it is economical, easy to install, and effective at filtering out the most deadly contaminants. Can be installed for whole house filtration, providing water for bathing that is free of chlorine and other contaminants which can also improve indoor air quality.

Cons: Does not completely remove arsenic, fluoride, and nitrates. Susceptible to mold attacks.

2. Ceramic Water Filter (like Stefani Terracotta)

How it works: (Counter top) A cartridge of a fossil substance and/or nano-silver effectively traps and neutralizes bacteria.

Pros: Removes 95% of chlorine, pesticides, iron, aluminium and lead; and 99% of cryptosporidium, guardia and sediment.

Cons: Does not remove fluoride. Often produces a slow water flow.

3. Water Distiller

How it works: Water is boiled, killing microbes, steam is collected as distilled water leaving solid contaminants behind.

Pros: Distilled water is pure H20.

Cons: Minerals are eliminated in the filtration process.

4. Reverse Osmosis Filter

How it works: (Under sink installation) Relies on technology called hyper-filtration, producing water that is essentially the same as distilled water.

Pros: RO filters remove essentially all contaminants.

Cons: Although this water is very pure, it is also devoid of essential minerals.

5. Water Ionizer (like Kangen & Jupiter)

How it works: (Under sink or counter top) A water ionizers or electrolyzed alkaline water filter separates water into an alkaline, mineral-rich water for drinking and an acidic, mineral-void water for washing and cleaning.

Pros: Many people who drink alkaline water report health benefits, while the antiseptic properties of acid water make it excellent for cleaning.

Cons: Water ionizers may still require additional pre-filtration to completely remove fluoride. The ionization is only effective for about an hour, so if you fill a bottle on the go it’s healthful properties may be gone by the time you’re gulping.

6. Magnetic Systems

How it works: Polarizes minerals in water as it is passed through a magnetic field or media.

Pros: Purported benefits similar to water ionizers.

Cons: Does not filter or ionize water.

7. Ultraviolet Water Purification Lamps (used in 3rd world hotels)

How it works: Irradiates water with UV rays that kill all living organisms.

Pros: Very effective at killing microbes.

Cons: Ineffective at particle filtration.

Still Confused? Here’s the last drop:

Ultimately , it’s up to you to decide what’s important for your family, and you can read more about water filters here. My conclusion, which is consistent with the Weston A. Price Foundation, and others, is that since fluoride can only be removed by distillation or reverse osmosis, the best option is to completely purify your water and then add minerals back into it with a supplement like Trace Minerals drops. Another option is offered by Beyond 02, which has a complete reverse osmosis filtering system followed by a re-mineralization process for the ideal water straight from your tap.

A whole house filter is a great idea, especially if anyone in your household suffers from allergies, asthma, or other respiratory conditions. But if you’re concerned about completely removing potential toxins such as fluoride and arsenic, you probably still want to follow the former recommendation for your drinking water as well.

If the costs of these filters seems impossible, don’t go on a water strike… choose the next best option in your price range. This may be a countertop Brita filter or good ole’ tap water. Though important, the perfect water is just one piece of the big picture of achieving health and well being.

A Few Words About Water as a Limited Resource

In an age where Coca Cola and Pepsi are making bank on bottled water, it’s really not a huge surprise that clean drinking water is a precious commodity. Here in Los Angeles, only 30% of our water comes from local ground water. The rest is shipped in from the Colorado River and dams and reservoirs along a 444 mile aqueduct starting in Northern California. Please remember this the next time you have a 15 minute shower or water you nice green lawn on a hot day. Be sure to share this knowledge with your children so they might still have clean water to drink when they’re in your shoes.

4 Reasons to Try Oriental Medicine

Let’s face it, our healthcare system sucks. We pay too much for care that is often impersonal and ineffective. Insurance is a maze that creates more stress than well-being.

Oriental medicine offers an alternative option for your family’s health. Here’s four great reasons why you should choose Oriental Medicine for Your family’s health.

1. It Works –

For acute and chronic conditions, patients young and old, scientific research is beginning to prove what millions of patients and OM practitioners have known for thousands of years: It works!

In recent years, studies including clinical trials have lead leading health organizations to recognize the effectiveness of OM treatments such as acupuncture, moxibustion and herbal remedies. OM is finally gaining the outstanding reputation it’s had for millennia in the East throughout the rest of the world.

2. It’s Safe –

Oriental Medicine is a natural modality that enhances the body’s innate healing abilities resulting in:

Less Side Effects- Unlike all pharmaceuticals, Chinese herbs, acupuncture and other OM treatments do not involve side effects uncomfortable or dangerous side effects. Side effects are an indication that medications are disrupting the way the body is functioning. OM treatments work to restore balance and harmony within the body rather than cause disruptions.

Little Risk- OM treatments are so safe, most practitioners pay approximately $50 a month for malpractice insurance versus Western doctors who spend an average of $1000 monthly for coverage. Herbal treatments, acupuncture and other OM treatments involve virtually no risk or potential safety hazard when administered by skilled practitioners.

3. It will Save you $$! –

OM is a preventative medicine that addresses the whole person and aims to treat the root cause of illnesses, not just symptoms. Preventative medicine, though seemingly costly on the outset, prevents chronic illnesses that will cost infinitely more in treatment with medications, surgeries, and procedures.

As an example, investing $20 in high quality fish oil can help prevent heart disease, promote heart health and treat depression, among many other health benefits. Compared to the actual cost of taking high blood pressure medication or antidepressants long term, investing in high quality fish oil is a bargain!

4. It Improves Quality of Life –

One of the best results of individualized and preventative care of Oriental medicine is improved quality of life. OM often involves lifestyle recommendations that not only promote good health, but improve how you look, feel and function in your daily life.

A healthier diet, regular exercise, and stress management can improve your mood, help you sleep better and promote weight loss. You’ll have more energy for activities you enjoy. You’ll feel more relaxed and less stressed out, and relationships with family and friends will improve, too. The same thing happens when treating or managing health conditions doesn’t involve side effects, discomfort or stress.

Just knowing you have responsibility for and power over your own health can improve your quality of life as well.

The first time I heard about the Blood Type Diet, I had just moved from the east coast and was working as a waitress in Malibu. I impatiently waited for a customer to decide what items on the menu fit her blood type, all the while thinking, “OMG! Yet another weird diet for body-obsessed Californians!” Many years later, I have a more balanced view on blood type and its role in our well being.

Blood type is part of everyone’s unique physical and biological makeup, and is vitally important in Western medical treatments like blood transfusions. But research by Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo links blood type with a much more complex and important role – our overall health, including longevity, resistance to disease, and physical and emotional health. Dr. D’Adamo suggests that blood type acts as a “story line” of our ancestry, and the blood type diets insures that we eat the ideal foods for our genetic makeup.

By relying on blood type as a “road map,” each of us can make decisions about diet, lifestyle choices, and medical treatments that will work best for our particular biology.

Understanding Your Blood Type

Type O

O types do best with a carnivorous diet rich in meat and fish, but cannot digest dairy or wheat well. Vegetables and nuts are recommended for type Os, but legumes should be eaten sparingly.

These food recommendations are in line with Type Os predisposition to stomach and thyroid disorders and “environmentally intolerant” immune systems. Prone to “fight-or-fight” responses, Type Os also thrive on intense physical activity, and should avoid stimulants.

Type A

A types thrive on a vegan diet that is rich in plant foods. Fresh, organic foods including vegetables, grains, beans, tofu, fruit and legumes are recommended. Occasional seafood is the only suggested animal protein food.

The diet for Type As reflects their sensitive immune system and predisposition to cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Type As often internalize stress and do best with gentle exercise and a strong sense of community.

Type B

The Type B diet reflects their flexible digestive system and strong immune system. Type Bs can break down fats, animal proteins and carbohydrates without difficulty, so they are able to eat a wide variety of foods, including dairy products.

Grains, beans and legumes, fruit and vegetables are all good choices, while chicken, shellfish and tomatoes should be eliminated from the diet. B Types are often flexible and adaptable to life’s challenges and thrive on both physically and mentally stimulating activities.

Type AB

Those with blood type AB should consume a mixed diet including meat, seafood, dairy, beans, most grains, legumes, and plant foods. Red meat should be avoided, as should any grain products or breads that contain corn or buckwheat. AB’s do best with small meals and may benefit from avoiding the combo of protein and starch in the same meal.

The mixed diet is in keeping with this blood types’ usual resistance to allergies and ABs’ risk for heart disease, anemia and cancer. AB’s do best with a mixture of intense and gentle exercise.
.

In my practice I take blood type into consideration as one piece of information that may provide insight into your ideal diet and lifestyle. It’s important to remember that this is only a bit of your unique make up, and just as it would be foolish to base your entire life’s decisions on your astrology chart, blood type is also not your only guide.

You can find out more about the blood type diet and Dr. D’Adamo’s book, Eat Right 4 Your Type at DaDamo.com.

Soy’s had a huge hey-day as a miracle food from the 90’s, and the hype is still alive and well for many health-conscious people. BUT, while soy and soy products may serve as a good source protein and other nutrients for vegetarians, in reality, this bean has quite of list of reasons why to just say NO including allergies, thyroid problems, hormonal imbalances including PMS and infertility, and more.

Before you pour that soy milk on your cereal or down a tofu scramble, read about how this “health” food may be causing more harm than good.

Phytoestrogens

Soy contains more phytoestrogens than almost any other food product. Phytoestrogen is plant-based estrogen that mimic the natural estrogen found in our bodies. The potential problem with this chemical is the effect it can have on individuals who under normal circumstances have no need for an estrogen supplement.

Peri-menopausal women may use soy products to help control discomforting symptoms that result from hormonal imbalances, including hot flashes and mood swings. But what are the effects of phytoestrogen on men, children, teens and young women?

Early Onset Puberty- Children given soy formula as infants may experience early puberty as compared to their non-soy-guzzling peers. Early puberty is a problem because it exposes the body to sex hormones for a longer period of time that what is normal.

For young boys, this means an increased risk of developing testicular cancer as an adult.

For girls, early puberty increases the lifetime risk of developing breast cancer, ovarian cysts, and thyroid disease.

Breast Cancer- The consumption of soy products and increased intake of phytoestrogens may be linked to the onset of breast cancer at an early age in women .

Throid issues- Japanese research suggests consuming soybeans may cause hypothroidism and goiter.

Male Fertility Issues- The phytoestrogens present in soy can significantly lower a man’s sperm count which can contribute to infertility.

Toxicity and Allergens

Toxicity- High manganese levels in soy formula may cause brain damage from toxicity. There also appears to be a relationship between soy formula consumption and the development of ADHD and behavioral problems in kids.

Allergies- While soy is among the top 8 most common food allergens, it can be a silent villian since allergic reactions to soy are not always immediate.

Genetically Modified Soy Foods

The phytoestrogens and other substances in soy foods may be the cause of health risks, but that’s not the only problem with soy.

Since the 1990s, genetically modified soy is widely grown and included in food products in the U.S. The seeds used in these crops are genetically modified in laboratories to enhance desirable traits, such as improved nutritional content, heat resistance or resistance to herbicides.

GM foods pose huge threats on the environment, reek havoc for farmers livelihood, and may be dangerous to human health including possible increase risk for allergy.

Take a Conservative Approach to Soy Consumption

Be conservative and conscious about your soy consumption. Avoid genetically modified soy, eliminate soy where possible (especially for children or those with any immune system weakness or possible hormone imbalance), then enjoy soy foods you love in moderation. Two more things to know:

Go Fermented- Only consume fermented soy products, such as tempeh, miso, natto, and fermented tofu. Fermented soy does not contain the toxins present non-cultured soy products. Fermentation increases the availability of isoflavones which are associated with cancer prevention, and fermentation produces probiotics, the beneficial bacteria that improves digestion and nutrient absorption in the body.

Read your labels- Soy is a common ingredient in popular “health” foods and protein supplements. Make sure you know what you’re putting in your mouth to avoid accidentally saucing yourself with soy.

What is Oriental Medicine?

Oriental Medicine (OM) is one of the world’s most ancient healing systems, used to maintain and restore vibrant health to men, women and children of all ages for over 4,000 years. Today, prominent health organizations such as the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) recognize the benefits of Oriental Medicine and endorse its practice as a safe, valid and effective form of medicine for many medical conditions.

Oriental Medicine and Taoism Simplified

The basic theories of Oriental medicine correlate to the Taoist view of the universe. According to Taoist philosophy, everything in existence is created through the union of two forces called Yin and Yang which function in polar opposition to each other, much as day and night, wet and dry, winter and summer, and cold and hot.

When Yin and Yang are in balance within an individual and harmony exists, good health results. Disharmony or an imbalance between Yin and Yang produces disease and ill health. The aim of OM is to restore balance where it is lacking. In western science, the equivalent concept is homeostasis.

Acupuncture, Chinese herbal treatments, nutrition and lifestyle recommendations as well as other specialized OM therapies are used to promote the healthy flow of vital energy throughout the body, called “Qi” (pronounced “chee”.) When the flow of Qi is disrupted, blocked, or out of balance, disease, illness or pain results. The restoration of the healthy flow of Qi brings balance that allows the body to naturally heal itself.

Here are some of the unique characteristics of Oriental medicine:

Gardener vs. Mechanic

OM approaches health care in a very different fundamental way from Western medicines. To understand the difference, consider the job of a mechanic versus the work of a gardener.

Western medicine views health care as if practitioners are mechanics whose job is to fix broken parts. This approach tends to focus on and try to cure individual symptoms, medical conditions or illnesses as if they are the result of a malfunction in one area or “part” of the body. Stomach conditions are treated by focusing on the stomach, just like a mechanic might replace brakes when a car fails to slow down or stop.

While a brake job might be just what your car needs if your brakes don’t work, the body is much more complex than an automobile. The “practitioner as mechanic” model simply is not enough when it’s applied to human beings. Unlike cars, the systems and organs of the body work together rather than in isolation from each other.

By contrast with medicine western, OM practitioners’ approach is to tend to the body much as a gardener would tend to a garden.
OM addresses the “root” cause of medical conditions rather than just attempting to alleviate a symptom, or the “branch.” If the leaves on a plant are wilting, it isn’t because they are “broken” and need to be fixed. It’s usually a sign that the entire plant is suffering some sort of physical distress.
Successful gardeners will look to treat and support the health of the entire plant rather than just focusing on the leaves. Wilting leaves are like medical symptoms. They point to deeper, root causes for health problems or diseases OM seeks to treat or alleviate.

Oriental medical practitioners rely on tools such as acupuncture, herbs and other treatments to restore or sustain good health much as gardeners rely on irrigation and other farming methods to grow healthy, strong plants and flowers. Working together over time, OM doctors and patients cultivate the garden of good health each individual represents.

Treatment of the Individual

Another unique aspect of OM is that it treats each patient as an individual. Rather than treating a “disease” or a “symptom,” OM treats every patient in a personalized, specific and holistic way.

OM practitioners address the unique imbalances of all patients and focus on treating the body, mind, and spirit with individualized treatments. OM practitioners evaluate each patient to identify the specific overall, big picture of their health. They can then alleviate the pain of indigestion, but also address the underlying cause that created the issue in the first place.

In the case of three different patients with stomach aches, the end result will be the same – no more indigestion. But one patient may be suffering from stress inducing indigestion, another may be over-consuming food so his digestion is over-loaded, and yet another may have an underlying digestive weakness due to over-use of antibiotics. In each case, the root cause of each patient’s digestive upset will be treated according to his/her own personal needs, and they can all experience better digestion even though their treatments were not the same.

Restores the Body’s Innate Healing Abilities

Oriental Medicine relies on simple, natural treatments to correct patients’ imbalances and restore health. Treatments reflect OM’s natural approach to the body’s organs and systems and how they function and interrelate.

In addition, OM tends to focus on the beginning of the chain of events physiology involves, so it stimulates and promotes self-healing. Ultimately, OM produces a much different long-term result than most western medicines.

Western medicines often focus on the end result of medical treatments, or the final outcome of the course of healing. In the case of chronic pain, a doctor might prescribe a medication that will interfere with the way nerves transmit pain. The pain is alleviated, but not because the cause of the pain is treated, or the body has healed. Rather, it’s the sensation of pain – the end result of the problem - that’s actually the focus of treatment. While you might be relieved that your chronic pain is alleviated, you’re left in a predicament when you’re dependent on medication for pain relief. As soon as you stop taking your medication, your nerves start functioning normally again. You feel pain just as you did before you visited the doctor.

By contrast, OM focuses on the beginning of the chain of reactions involved in your chronic pain, or where it really starts. Acupuncture and herbs treat the underlying or root cause of the pain. By starting at the beginning, OM can stimulate the body’s natural ability to self-heal right from the start. Instead of needing medication to interrupt nerve function to stop pain, your body heals itself, and chronic pain is resolved.

Many patients find the unique perspective and individualized approach involved in Oriental Medicine healing a refreshing change. They prefer natural treatment options that allow the body to heal itself. Anyone who is interested in true healing rather simply treating or preventing symptoms will find Oriental Medicine an appealing and effective solution.

Peeing the bed at night can become a source of embarrassment and stress for kids, especially as they start to grow older.
Occasional bed wetting isn’t uncommon, but if it happens on a regular basis (after the age of three) it may indicate an underlying health imbalance.

In the vast majority of cases, medical tests fail to identify a physical cause for bed wetting. Western medicine treatments for bed wetting usually involve counseling or behavioral or motivational therapy. Doctors may prescribe medications to reduce urine production or increase bladder capacity, but these drugs can produce major side effects and do little to control bed wetting.

Traditional Chinese Medicine identifies a root cause for bed wetting with safe and provides effective treatment options. TCM views bed wetting as a disorder of water metabolism in the body. The following are three common patterns that can contribute to bed wetting. Other imbalances not mentioned here may also contribute:

Kidney Meridian Deficiency – Urinary dysfunction in western medicine often involves the kidneys. In Chinese medicine, this pattern does not necessarily indication disease of the kidney organ. Symptoms include night time urination one or more times per night, frequent clear urination, pale complexion, tendency to low back or knee soreness or injury, possible chilled limbs or avoidance of cold.

Spleen and Lung Qi Deficiency – Not associated with disease of these organs, this pattern often occurs during or after another illness, frequent but scanty urination, a pale complexion, fatigue, low mood, easily sweating, and loose stools.

Damp heat- is another possible TCM diagnosis of bed wetting in children. These children will typically have dark colored, strong-colored urine, irritability, talking in one’s sleep, grinding teeth at night, red lips, and tongue.

Each of the above patterns will have a different treatment. A Chinese Medicine practitioner will take a complete history, physical exam, and assess your child’s symptoms. Treatments will be catered you’re your child’s specific needs and may include herbs, acupressure, Shonishin, and moxibustion. These techniques are safe, painless, non-invasive and very effective. Your practitioner may suggest one or more remedies for treatment, and parents may be taught and encouraged to use some treatments at home.

If your child occasionally pees in the bed, don’t worry, he’s likely to outgrow it soon. If frequent bed wetting has you concerned about your child’s health and/or self-esteem, Chinese medicine may provide gentle and effective solutions.

George looked at me disbelieving and asked, “Why?” Funny you should ask Mr. President… Here’s a guide to good and evil in the universe of sweets.

A (Healthy?) Spoonful of Sugar

In the world of health and nutrition, sugar is surely a creation of a little red man with horns, a swishing tail, a red cape, and a pitch fork. Tempting, delicious, addictive, and destructive - sugar can simultaneously bestow us with immense joy and serious health problems. For nutritional angels and for those with health conditions exacerbated by sugar, elimination may be the only way. For everyone else, the goal is a finding a balance between radiating health and indulging our sweet-tooth.

Let’s keep something straight: SUGAR is SUGAR. It doesn’t matter if it’s natural (fresh squeezed orange juice) or refined (a Snickers bar), sugar is used the same in the body.

By fueling the body with fast, empty calories, sugar wreaks total havoc on the body’s blood sugar, causing it to spike suddenly and rapidly crash. This can cause low blood sugar or hypoglycemia and a whole host of side effects. When your blood sugar is low, you may find it hard to complete mental tasks, feel anxious, depressed, or fatigued. You will often crave more sugar or carbohydrate-dense foods that start the blood sugar spike and crash cycle all over again.

Here’s a partial list of some obvious and not-so-obvious effects of sugar:

Promotes dental decay and plaque accumulation

Exacerbates hyperactivity in children

Upsets tummy

Disturbs sleep

Depletes the body of vital nutrients

Weakens the immune system

Creates a pH imbalance that can result in rashes, infections, and in the long-term can contribute to cancer

How Sugar Cane Becomes Junk

Real, natural sugar is derived by boiling sugar cane and harvesting the crystals that remain after the liquid evaporates. This type of sugar also contains valuable nutrients including fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals.

Unfortunately, most of the sugar readily available today is processed and refined, evaporated cane juice sugar. Even so-called “raw” sugar is washed, boiled, put through a centrifuge, filtered and then dried. All of the original plant materials that contained fiber and nutrients are removed when sugar is refined. What’s left is a high calorie food substance with no nutritional value.

All Sweeteners are NOT Equal

Here’s a guideline to understanding natural and artificial sweeteners :

1. AVOID all chemical and highly processed sweeteners and look out for them hidden in “sugar-free” foods, chewing gums, and toothpaste. They may be low in calories, but that doesn’t mean they’re safe or healthy.

Acesulfame-K (aka Sunette or Sweet One) allegedly passes through the body unchanged, but this sweetener contains the carcinogen methylene chloride which can cause headaches, depression, nausea, mental confusion, liver effects, kidney effects, visual disturbances, and cancer in humans.

Aspartame (found in Nutrasweet, Equal, and Sugar Twin) is dangerous for anyone who has phenylketonuria (PKU), but many people report negative side effects following consumption, including headaches, dizziness, memory loss, fatigue and depression to name a few. Children are especially susceptible to aspartame effects.

Saccharin (found in the pink packets as Sweet and Low) has been associated with bladder tumors in animal studies and allergic reactions. Saccharin is also found in some infant formulas (!) and is linked to irritability and muscle dysfunction in babies.

Sucralose (aka Splenda), the new golden child of artificial sweeteners, is made by chlorinating sugar. It offers no nutritional value and according to the book Sweet Deception, sucralose is made when sugar is treated with trityl chloride, acetic anhydride, hydrogen chlorine, thionyl chloride, and methanol in the presence of dimethylformamide, 4-methylmorpholine, toluene, methyl isobutyl ketone, acetic acid, benzyltriethlyammonium chloride, and sodium methoxide, making it unlike anything found in nature. Yum.

Despite manufacturer’s claims that it passes through the body without being metabolized, government ruling bodies in the US and Japan have conclude that Sucralose is partially absorbed and metabolized. Since Sucralose is a new product, significant testing has not been done. I recommend avoiding this an any substance that does not exist in nature when known, safe alternatives exist. (Sorry Mr. Washington!)

2. Use SPARINGLY: natural, unrefined/raw sweeteners. Natural sweeteners are calorie dense and will impact blood sugar levels very similar to white processed sugar, but they do provide additional nutritional value.

Natural fruit sugars – Eating fruit may curb a sweet tooth, and fruit provides the body with beneficial fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and other nutrients. If a package reads:“Fruit-Juice Sweetened,” know that the food probably has no more health benefit that if it contained straight sugar.

All-natural maple syrup is incredibly flavorful, and it’s also rich in calcium, potassium, iron, and other trace minerals. You can flavor foods with liquid syrup or purchase granulated maple sugar crystals for adding to recipes and for baking.

Local raw honey that’s unprocessed and bottled straight from the hive is delicious used in recipes and is a great sweetener for warm beverages. Raw honey contains probiotic qualities, and is associated with many health benefits including improvement digestive problems and allergies.

Black Strap Molasses is the thick, dark, by-product that remains when sugar is made from cane or beet. This flavorful sweetener is extremely nutritious and high in essential nutrients including iron, calcium, Vitamin B6, magnesium, potassium and others.

Rapadura (available at many health food stores) is made from organic cane sugar but is unrefined, so it contains vitamins, minerals, and other trace elements.

3. Give these a try: Healthy Sugar Substitutes are essential for those wanting or needing to completely eliminate sugar. These sweeteners may sometimes be challenging to find or use in cooking preparations, but suggestions are plentiful online.

Stevia plant extracts offer many possible health benefits and is recommended by nutritional experts such as Weston A. Price Foundation and Dr. Mercola, but you may notice a chemical-like aftertaste when consuming Stevia powders. I advise making your own decision with Stevia based on your own health needs and personal taste. If you do use it, seek out minimally processed products.

Glycerine is not chemically related to sugar and seems to have a very negligible effect on insulin and blood sugar levels, thus making it a safe sweetener for diabetics, hypoglycemics and people with Candida yeast problems. Glycerine does increase blood volume so should be avoided by pregnant women and those with high blood pressure, diabetes or kidney diseases.

Lo Han Guo is a powder made from sweet Chinese fruit in the cucumber, melon, squash, and gourd family and is growing in popularity for people that must restrict sugar intake. The Lo Han fruit has been used by people in southern China for centuries as a sweetener and a medicinal herb for the treatment of lung congestion, colds, sore throats and minor stomach and intestinal problems with no known adverse effects.

4. Use with CAUTION: New and Controversial sweeteners like…

Xylitol – A sugar alcohol that is great for preventing tooth decay and inhibiting bacteria growth for respiratory and ear infections and has many more claims for benefiting health. Xylitol has no known toxic levels in humans but can cause mild diarrhea or slight cramping and is toxic to dogs. As with other sugar alcohols, the opinion is split as to its long term effects.

Agave plant syrup is a purported as a natural alternative to refined, processed sugar, and it’s heavily marketed today as a “raw” foods sweetener. In reality, it’s extensively processed under high heat, and consumers should be aware they’re not paying for or consuming a “raw” or whole food sweetener if they buy agave syrup.

Soothing the Sweet Tooth

According to Chinese Medicine, sweet is one of the five essential flavors necessary to keep diet in balance. In small doses, naturally sweet foods actually support digestion. Here’s my three basic rules when it comes to eating sweets with grace:

Moderation - Unless you already suffer from diabetes or a condition that is worse with sugar consumption, the key is MODERATION for your children and yourself. It’s often the kids that are forbidden candy that horde it under their beds. It’s wise to practice moderation even if you’re opting for healthy alternatives to sugar.

Quality Not Quantity - If you skip gas station candy bars and hold out for handmade or home baked sweets, you insure you are getting higher quality ingredients.

Organic is always best as over-processing strips healthy nutrients from the food, and even strips your body from essential minerals.

Fair Trade Certification insures your treats are made with the highest standards of social and environmental responsibility. In other words, small children and rainforests did not die for your chocolate bar!

A word about chocolate: If chocolate is your vice, go as close to dark, raw, and low sugar as your craving will consider for satiation. Chocolate actually contains anti-oxidants and other healthy nutrients, so just a bit will do a body good!

Eat With Joy! – Science shows that “mind over matter” is real. So if you feel guilty and “bad” every time you indulge in a sweet treat, your body will read your mind and agree that you’ve ingested poison! Whether you choose a cupcake or collard greens, celebrate it, and your body will be more likely to welcome your food as nourishment.

If you’ve ever tried to console a child having a night terror, you know that it is no laughing matter. Though they can seem like very traumatic experiences for the child and can be a big source of concern for parents, understanding what night terrors are (and aren’t) will help the whole family cope with this common condition.

Night terrors usually last from 5 to 20 minutes, and the child may sit up in bed, shout, scream, sweat and thrash as if out of fear. Her heartbeat may race and breathing might be faster. After a while, she usually calms down and goes back to sleep. If a child does wake after or during a night terror, she may seem inconsolable. Since night terrors don’t involve dreams, the child won’t usually remember any scary images or understand what’s frightening or upsetting them.

Although night terrors can be terrifying and confusing for parents, they’re usually nothing major to worry about; Night terrors are typically non-pathological occurrences for children. They don’t usually indicate an underlying medical condition or mental disorder, and they’re typically nothing more than a disturbance in the sleep cycle.

Parents may mistake night terrors for a bad nightmare experience, but they are actually two different things. Nightmares occur during the specific stage of sleep known as REM, the part of the sleep cycle where dreams occur. Night terrors occur during the very deep, non-REM sleep stage. There’s typically no dream at all involved in night terrors. Sleep experts believe night terrors are actually a fear reaction that happens as children move from one sleep phase into another.
Some children sleep through night terrors without waking at all, even if their eyes are open! Unless they’re made aware of it, many children never know they’re experiencing night terrors.

There isn’t a lot parents can do during a night terror episode. Speaking calmly to your child from a slight distance may help. If you try to comfort a child experiencing a night terror physically, you could make the situation worse by suddenly awakening and frightening her.

Although there’s no underlying disease associated with night terrors, medications, stress, fatigue, and even teething are triggers parents may be able to identify. Keeping your child on a regular sleep schedule may help reduce the occurrence of night terrors. Chinese medicine can help distinguish any subtle underlying imbalances that may be contributing to the episodes. Your practitioner may be able to offer some solutions for soothing your child with at home treatment such as gentle acupressure or herbal remedies return peaceful nights to you and your child.
